West Bromich Albion F.C. History: (1939 – 1950)

In the league season of 1939-40, only three games were played, but the results were deleted from the records when, on 3rd September, Britain was once again at war with Germany. Immediately, all organized football was suspended, but unlike the first war, not all games were suspended it was generally decided that football of a somewhat limited regional nature should continue for the entertainment of the munitions- workers in their limited leisure time. Albion resumed in the Midland Regional League.During the first six years of the War, all soccer was regionalized with the same teams meeting five or six times a year, attendances plunged, sometimes dipping below the one thousand markOnce normal league competition was resumed in 1946 (the 1945–46 season had been organised on a regional basis) Albion remained in the Second Division.
In June 1948 Fred Everis resigned as secretary. Albion appointed Jack Smith to new new role of team manager over 100 applications had been recieved for the new job, Smith had played for the Albion between 1942 - 44 in the War League, within 9 months Albion were back in Division One.Two league seasons had been spent in trying to get a settled side which could win promotion and perhaps get past the fourth round of the Cup for the first time since 1937, and it seemed that this had been finally achieved by the autumn of 1948Albion's First Division reign commenced with a 1-0 home victory secured in the last six minutes at home to Charlton on 20th August 1949 and the team consolidated its position to gain a comfortable mid-table position by Christmas. Among the victims were Everton 4-0 and champions Portsmouth 3-0, but the great trophy was always, the FA Cup.
